Shau Kei Wan is a residential area just east from Sai Wan Ho and is where the Tramline ends at the Shau Kei Wan tram terminus. The area also has a Main Bus terminus and MTR Station making the task of getting to and from Shau Kei Wan quite simple.
Shau Kei Wan is well known for its large scale public housing estates along Aldrich Bay but in the more recent years the section of Shau Kei Wan Main St just north of the Tram Terminus has increasingly become a favourite destination for the many foodies in Hong Kong.
Near the Tram Terminus along Shau Kei Wan Main St you can find a good selection of Asian cuisines with many restaurants being in business for years and has developed a large loyal following. While further down the Street the restaurants vary and give way to new and trendy western offerings and plenty of cake and dessert shops.
Shau Kei Wan used to be an old fishing village as the bay provided a good a safe haven for ships during the Typhoon, according to popular belief, the bay or “Wan” resembled a colander or “Shau Kei” and hence the name. Remnants of its fishermen Heritage still remain such as the historical Tin Hau and Tam Kung Temples that were poplular places of worship for fishermen for seafaring folk.
