Located at the eastern peninsula south of Hong Kong Island, Shek O is a quaint seaside village that is flanked with large sandy beaches on both sides. This isolated little area has attracted many expats in the last decade wanting to trade in the hustle and bustle of the city, for a quiet and relaxed lifestyle by the beach.
Shek O was once a traditional fishing village and while it still retains the older style Chinese walk-ups, many of these buildings now are renovated and offer a modern and trendy interior. Around the village is dotted with restaurants that cater to both locals and beach goers, and also some mom & pop grocery shops.
In contrast, further up on the hills above the village, you can find the Shek O Headlands, an area with luxury townhouse and villas that offer spectacular sea views atop the peninsula. Many of these large private homes offer their own private garden, car parking and even swimming pools, these residences are some of the most sought after in Hong Kong.
There are many benefits of being located in this little corner at the bottom of Hong Kong, the beaches of Shek O has some of the cleanest waters and if you live in the village it is literally just a stroll away, the community is more tight knit and laid back, and other than the usual beach activities, the location offers a unique accessibility to many outdoor activities around the peninsula. Located just behind Shek O is the Shek O Peak with the sprawling “Dragons Back” hiking trail arguably the best hiking trail in the whole of Hong Kong, to the north is the Shek O Golf and Country Club, and bit further up is “Big Wave Bay” Hong Kong’s own surfers paradise.
