Repulse Bay

Repulse Bay is renowned for its large crescent shaped beach that is the widely regarded as the most beautiful in Hong Kong and an iconic landmark that is often featured in films or photoshoots. With sandy beaches, water temperatures ranging from 16ºC - 26ºC (60.8ºF - 80.6ºF), a floating platform to swim out to and shark nets, there is no better location if you are looking for a day out on the beach or to escape the summer heat.

The resort like atmosphere of Repulse Bay with the wide beach and plenty of surrounding greenery is a complete polar opposite to the cityscape that Hong Kong is famous for. Many would think that the area is oddly out of place in Hong Kong, this conception is completely warranted, in fact the Bay was purposely developed and the beach extended artificially to attract swimmers en-route to Central in 1910. The Business savvy was quick to take advantage of this brand new scenery and attraction with the iconic Repulse Bay Hotel completing shortly afterwards in 1919.

Overlooking the Bay this hotel quickly became a popular out-of-town resort especially for honeymooners and tourists and developed a rich history, hosting many well-known figures celebrities. Notably, in 1941 the hotel was besieged by the Japanese for 3 days, with dozens of refugees taking shelter there, and even with the subsequent occupation, dances were still held and the music still played in the Repulse Bay Hotel.

The iconic Hotel was unfortunately demolished in 1981, and the only reminder of it, is a faux replica of an entrance that decorates the apartment complex “The Repulse Bay” that now stands in its place. This prominent apartment block has become an icon in itself with a large square hole in the middle of the building, many assume that the hole is for Fung Shei reasons dictated by the dragon that dwells on the hill behind it, but the reasoning might be as simple as an Architects affinity to a similar building in Miami.

Other than the aquatic activities, Repulse Bay in the recent years has also become a trendy place to eat, relax and shop, with spas, designer shops and even award winning restaurants.
