While living in Hong Kong, you might think that in this concrete jungle of apartment buildings, the most exercise you will get is carrying bags of shopping around the retail districts or shopping malls. Amazingly behind the concrete façade there are sprawling mountains, greenery, beaches and coves providing those who are more venturous a welcome contrast to the crowded city. In Hong Kong only around 25% of the land is developed and around 40% is devoted to country parks allowing for many options for outdoor activities. So instead of being couped up in your Hong Kong apartment, below are some outdoor activities that can offer a welcome change to the scenary.

With so many country parks that are easily accessible, it is not surprising that Hiking is one of the most favourite outdoor activities in Hong Kong. There are many trails all over Hong Kong, the most popular being the Maclehose Trail, the Lantau Island trail, the Hong Kong Island Trail and the Wilson trail. Hong Kong hiking can provide diverse scenery with natural flora and fauna, coastlines, streams and even waterfalls. But beware, there can be many hidden dangers while hiking these mountainous trails, so never hike alone, before you leave your apartment check the weather and be prepared with suitable clothing and equipment. For more safety tips and information on Hiking go to the Hong Kong Government website.

Hong Kong comprises of Islands and a peninsula, so naturally there are many beaches located all over the territory. If you are renting a property or living in Hong Kong it is worthwhile to visit the beaches which are found in Hong Kong Island, Eastern New Territories and the outlying Islands such as Cheung Chau and Lantau. Due to the sub tropical climate of Hong Kong the waters are mostly warm and great for swimming or for a quick dip, but do check out the water quality bulletins for the suitable conditions. The many coasts and coves also allow for boating and many water sports, including canoeing, jet skiing, water skiing and wind surfing the sport in which the first and only Olympic gold medal Hong Kong has won.

Also in Hong Kong, Island hopping can be a fascinating experience, a short ferry ride can export you to a totally different surrounding and offer a glimpse of Hong Kong’s fishing heritage. Each Island has their own distinct character and a much slower pace of life, and most of these islands have apartments for rent overnight providing a convenient and quiet getaway from the city. The Central Ferry Pier has regular ferry services to Outlying Islands including Peng Chau and the more popular Lamma and Cheung Chau Islands, so rather than staying in your apartment for the weekend you can just hop on a ferry to a whole new experience.
